Few children learn to love books by themselves. Someone has to lure them into the wonderful world of the written word; someone has to show them the way.

About BOOK IT! Beginners
| |
|
| |
In The Classroom:
Teachers read to the children in their class at least 60
minutes a week during March and April. They write the name
of each book, story, poem, or article they read--or the
amount of time they read--on an interactive cutout, which
children then tape or glue onto the BOOK IT! Beginners poster.
Teachers can track the time they read on the colorful BOOK
IT! Beginners teacher calendar, which also includes a number
of reading and language activities to enhance the program's
effectiveness. |
| |
At Home
To involve parents in the program,
teachers are encouraged to give them a supply of the cutouts
so that when they read to their child at home, they can bring
the cutouts back to school to add to the poster. Teachers
can also send home a BOOK IT! Beginners parent calendar that
includes program instructions, reading and language activities,
and a book list for young readers. |
| |
|
| |
Who is eligible?
BOOK IT! Beginners is available for children ages
3-5, not yet in kindergarten, who attend a preschool/pre-kindergarten
program or licensed child-care facility. A regular faculty,
curriculum, and an enrolled body of at least four eligible
preschool children must be maintained. BOOK
IT! Beginners is a classroom-structured program and is not
available on an individual basis. |

Pizza Hut Rewards Reading Participation
At the end of each four-week reading period during March and
April, teachers will present each of the children in their
class with a certificate, which they can take to a participating
Pizza Hut restaurant for their very own free, one-topping
Personal Pan Pizza. The restaurant manager congratulates the
child for participating in BOOK IT! Beginners and, on each
visit, rewards the child with an award that says, "I'm
a BOOK IT! Beginner." |
| |
|
| |
All program materials
and rewards are free of charge. No purchase is required
at the restaurant and the pizza can be taken to go. Available
at participating Pizza Hut restaurants only.
