November is National Family Literacy Month. At BOOK IT! our team is focused on family literacy every day in our work, and as parents ourselves we can see firsthand at home the tangible benefits of reading with our kids every day. At this time of year, you may be celebrating your children’s reading achievements with a BOOK IT! certificate each month, but you don’t need a special occasion to celebrate your kids’ awesome reading skills. When your children are young you snuggle together and read “just one more” book each night. As they get older and are learning to read independently you sit together and listen as they read to you. And then when they are confident readers we tend to let them read alone each night before bed. But what if you didn’t stop reading together as your children get older? What if you set aside time each night just to bond over a shared love of reading? Imagine the conversations that will occur organically as you read books together and discuss the themes and plots. During a shared reading experience, your kids may also be more likely to share what’s happening in their lives and at school. Looking for read-alouds to share with your older kids, but worried you don’t know how to engage with the books? Check out the winners of the annual E.B. White Read-Aloud Award, and links to their discussion guides.
I am a BOOK IT! Team Member who is passionate about reading and pizza. It has been less than 1 day since I last ate Pizza Hut pizza, and about 20 minutes since I stealthily read a few pages of a book.
I truly believe that kids shouldn’t read because they have to, they should read because they want to! Find the right book, and get them hooked on reading for the fun of it. These recommendations are based on my 20+ years as a public library director, my 13+ years as a mother, and my 40+ years as a reader. Please don’t try to do the math - I’m experienced, let’s leave it at that.
