For every one of us that succeeds, it's because there's somebody there to show you the way out. The light doesn't always necessarily have to be in your family; for me it was teachers and school.

Student reads independently; parent reads
aloud to student; buddy reading; small group reading.
Small group reading is popular with
5th graders. Especially when you make it a social
event and have the discussion take place over
lunch! The child is still getting plenty of independent
reading time yet adding that element of discussion
takes the reader beyond their own thoughts and
perspectives. Buddy reading is also great for
5th graders because reading aloud creates relationships,
it’s empowering, and it’s fun! A combination
of the above keeps reading for BOOK IT! exciting
and fresh.
