We talked to Raúl the Third about writing books in Spanish and English, like his book ¡Vamos! Let’s go to the Market, and this is what he shared:

¡Vamos! Let’s go to the Market is based on trips that I would take as a little boy to visit my family in Juarez, Mexico where they worked at the Mercado Cuauhtemoc. Through the Vamos! books I am sharing slices of life as witnessed growing up in a border town. I feel incredibly lucky to have experienced two cultures and two languages as I grew up and I fill my books with the influence and inspiration that came to me from being raised there. My books are written in both Spanish and English and sometimes Spanglish because this is how people express themselves there in that part of our country. I love introducing my readers to the community that makes up the Mercado. With Little Lobo and Bernabé as their guide, they will get to meet many of my favorite vendors. I fill each illustration with so many details that it takes multiple readings to follow the various characters as they make their way through the Market. The drawings are inspired by my love of American cartooning and Mexican chapbooks and the coloring was done by artist extraordinaire Elaine Bay.
