Bird House is my first book as an author, and it’s a really special one for me. The story is inspired by my own childhood, although I can’t tell where memories end and imagination begins.
When I was little, my grandma used to take care of me while my parents were working, so I spent a lot of time at her home. One day, we found an injured bird in the snow. I tell in the book how we took it home and cared for it until it could fly free again.
This simple book is about love, and about care. Grandma cares for the bird, and she cares for her granddaughter. And through the pages we will discover that love sometimes means saying goodbye, and that care sometimes means saying no, even when it is hard to do.
While I was working on the book, the pandemic started, and this book became my refuge through those strange times. Remembering the warmth and love from my Abuela, and working on the illustrations of her home and all its little treasures, the tiny chair I still own, the cat … was a great help during those days of fear and lockdown.
I would like to think that part of this feeling of comfort has slipped between the pages of this book, and it can become a refuge for anyone else, at any time, in any part of the world.
