Author Spotlight-Jo Schofield and Fiona Danks
We talked to Jo Schofield and Fiona Danks about their book, Wild Things. Here is what they had to say about getting outside:
Wild Things is an outdoor activity book with a difference, packed with adventures to discover nature through imaginary play, exploration, storytelling and a sprinkling of magic.
Like many people, we found it difficult to detach our children from screen-based entertainment and get them outdoors. Saying “let's go on a walk” or “let’s learn about trees” wasn’t the answer. So, we put it another way; “let's go and find ingredients to make magic potions” and “let's go and meet some tree monsters” and the children would pull us out of the door. This approach inspired our series of books, each one packed with simple, fun activities.
All children need opportunities to play outside and explore wild places, so they grow up understanding the value and wonder of nature, even more so with the threats of human-induced climate change and habitat degradation.
The wild world is magical and inspiring, a place where the imagination can soar. A butterfly emerges from a chrysalis; perhaps a fairy could too? Wild Things is about using imagination to explore reality and inspire science, art and creative writing. Spy on fairies and tiny creatures in the garden, track dragons through the park or ride a unicorn in the woods - perhaps anything is possible!
It’s time to unlock the magical power of nature!
